Barrier Polyamides (MXD6 Nylon)

Brief Description

Nylon-MXD6 is a generic name given to a wide range of polyamides produced from m-xylenediamine (MXDA) by Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co., Ind. It is a crystalline polyamide produced by polycondensation of MXDA with adipic acid. Different from Nylon 6 and Nylon 66, Nylon-MXD6 is an aliphatic polyamide containing an aromatic ring in its main chain.

Compared with Nylon 6 and Nylon 66, Nylon-MXD6 has the following favorable characteristics:

Greater strength and elastic modulus;

High glass-transition temperature;

Low water absorption and moisture permeability;

Favorable crystallization speed and ease of molding and fabrication;

Excellent gas-barrier properties.

These features lead to greatly varied applications for Nylon-MXD6 as a packaging and molding material, and in the production of monofilaments.

Nylon-MXD6 shows an excellent gas-barrier quality against oxygen and carbon dioxide. Under certain conditions, its gas-barrier quality exceeds that of copolymerization resins such as ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), vinylidene chloride (PVDC), and acrylnitrile (PAN).

The molding specifications of Nylon-MXD6 match well with the criteria for molding other materials. This means you can use Nylon-MXD6 in combination with polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), or polyethylene (PE) to achieve co-injection molding and co-extrusion molding to produce laminated containers, bottles, and packaging sheets.
